BGP was responsible for the civil and structural design elements of the new Queen Elizabeth High School and Hexham Middle School. The scheme involved the co-location of the two schools to the Hexham Hydro site, with a refurbishment of the listed Hydro Building along with 4 new structural framed interconnected teaching blocks as well as a standalone sports building.

BGP completed the Civil and Structural Design of the project from concept to completion. 800 tonnes of structural steelwork was required to form the multi-storey teaching blocks which connect directly into the Hydro. The new buildings were clad in part with brickwork recycled from the original walled gardens. The Hydro refurbishment required internal alterations and a new lift shaft to allow disabled access to all floors along with a new connecting corridor through the existing roof structure.

Externally, retaining structures separate the areas which include new car parks and access roads and footpaths which have been constructed across the site with a modern interpretation of the walled garden constructed in the main courtyard.
